In a significant development, the low-pressure area (LPA) under surveillance by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has intensified into Tropical Depression "Kabayan." According to PAGASA's 5 a.m. public forecast, as of Sunday morning, December 17, the center of Kabayan's eye is situated approximately 525 kilometers east of Davao City, Davao del Sur. With a westward movement at 10 kilometers per hour (kph), Kabayan boasts maximum sustained winds of 55 kph near the center, accompanied by gustiness of up to 70 kph.
As concerns escalate, Kabayan is expected to make landfall over Surigao del Sur or Davao Oriental either on the evening of Sunday, December 17, or Monday morning, December 18. Weather specialist Patrick del Mundo from PAGASA emphasizes the potential for Kabayan to maintain its strength during its west-northwestward trajectory across the Philippine archipelago over the next two days. Notably, there is a possibility of Kabayan intensifying into a tropical storm before landfall, and the chance of weakening into an LPA post-landfall, only to redevelop into a tropical depression after emerging over the Sulu Sea cannot be ruled out. Consequently, tropical cyclone wind signal number 1 has been raised for several provinces, prompting PAGASA to issue warnings about the general wind threat associated with Kabayan. The public is advised to stay vigilant and stay tuned for further updates as the situation unfolds.
